How to Make a Bulletproof Bag - DIY Armored Backpack
How You Can Make a Bulletproof Backpack
Making a backpack bullet proof is as easy as sliding a backpack armor panel with ballistic protection into the laptop pocket of your bag (or other compartment close to your back).
When choosing protection for your backpack, we recommend utilizing an actual backpack armor ballistic insert, like our Flex Fused Core™ Level IIIA Soft Armor Backpack Panel.
If it fits, use the laptop pocket of your backpack to slide the insert in. If a Velcro strap is available, use that to secure it in place. The more securely the insert fits, the more efficient it will be when stopping projectiles.
This technique is not only limited to backpacks, but can be used for any bag or briefcase. Again, try to have it in a secure pocket or section of your bag.
With our Flex Fused Core™ Backpack Armor, you get level IIIA protection, which stops handgun rounds .44 MAG SJHP, As Well As Special Threat Rated To Stop .357 Sig FMJ.
You can add extra protection by just having general school supplies in there too, such as notebooks, binders, and books.
Note, we offer our Flex Fused Core™ IIIA soft armor front/back plates and IIIA Side Plates in 7 different sizes so you can add protection to other types of bags, this way you have protection even when a backpack isn’t practical for the situation.
Why Use Spartan Armor Systems® Backpack Armor?
When comparing bulletproof backpacks, it’s important to note the difference between a bulletproof backpack and a bulletproof insert for a backpack.
A bulletproof backpack most likely, does not have the capability to remove the protection, and therefore, cannot be washed, or transferred to a new bag. If the need arises for a new bag, you will have to purchase a whole new “bulletproof backpack”.
That’s where Spartan Armor Systems® comes in. With our inserts, you can still purchase a new bag or backpack and have the same protection as before. This is great for kids in school, that purchase a new backpack every year.
Our Flex Fused Core™ Soft Backpack Armor is lightweight (1lb 9.4oz), has a thin profile (.35” thick), is multi-hit rated to stop 6 rounds, and is proudly American made. Not to mention, get FREE SHIPPING on everything on our store.
If higher protection is what your looking for, look into our Level III or Level III+ body armor plates, that you can also slide into your bag. Need a hard plate that is still thin enough to fit in your backpack? Try our Armis Level IIIA Hard Armor Plate.
Why Do You Need an Armored Backpack Anyway?
It isn’t a secret that school shootings are on the rise in the U.S. Last year alone, there were 202 incidents of gunfire on school grounds. Note, not all of those were an active shooter situation, but in the case of a stray bullet, it’s smart to try to have protection around.
The higher the ballistic protection, the better, but it also depends on the situation. We recommend our Level IIIA backpack inserts because the most commonly used weapon in K-12 Shooter incidents is a handgun (or multiple of them).
When having a backpack with armor in it, we want that to protect the most vital areas of a person, which include the chest, neck, and head area. If a shooter scenario were to arise, make sure to position the backpack over these areas if applicable.
That means if in a corner, ducking behind it so it covers most of your head and body. If standing, again, duck behind it while it covers the head, neck, and chest area. Or if fleeing/running away, wear it high on your back to cover those areas.
